Start of World Tour events this week

Its just after 5am here in Shanghai and for the second morning in a row I am wide awake before the birds. Its a frustrating part of travel and often something we cant control. But I dont feel as sleep deprived as I did yesterday morning when I woke after 4 hours sleep. Last night I achieved 8 hours, I just feel asleep a bit too early.

China isnt one of my favourite destinations but the memories from this trip have already surpassed my experiences here last year when I was sick. We have meet up with the first of the Kiwi's we will see on our travels this year who bring a touch of home (and the arrival of NZ food which is a saviour here). Anna's partner has joined us as well as the "famous" NZ ref on the World Tour, Richard "Sooty" Casutt.

We finished our training week in Berlin but before leaving we had to off loaded 13kg of luggage that we would have paid 90 pounds for on British Airways. We had already been stung 82Euro from Italy to Germany and 90 pounds is not part of our tight budget. The off loaded luggage was meant to be collected by UPS couriers, but there was a glitch in the plan and we have a month to figure how best to get it to Hamburg, our next European destination. So for the next month Anna and I are will be sporting very little variation in what we wear after having to cut our luggage down to 20kg each which includes 3 balls each and other weighty items like protein powder.

What seemed like a normal long haul flight from London to Shanghai turned into 10.5 hours of frustration. We had asked for the seat between us to be blocked out to give us some space, but that didnt last because the economy part of the flight was full so we ended up with a weird man from Iceland between us. In hindsight I should have moved to the middle seat and Im sure we all would have had a more comfortable flight. With far to much flatulence from a near by male passenger, stolen leg room by the guy between Anna and I, elbows to the top of the shoulders by the same culprit, 3 movies and 2 sit coms later we arrived in Shanghai with perhaps 2 hours sleep tops.

But sleep eventually arrives in strange forms and the days tick by and take us closer to Thursday, the first day of our FIVB competition for the year, and as Anna said last week, we are straight into maindraw, a great position to be in.

I will email later in the week with results.

Well done.

Good start to a long season. you were a bit unlucky with the draw meeting katrin and Ilka(who I emailed last week telling them to play for a draw against you). Then the two Australians, new pair , seem to be very strong, but after all you are playing against the best in the world, if only the first set had gone the other way. Can one see the match stats on internet? Not that I could understand them! Looking forward to Japan and in the meantime enjoy reading the trials and tribulations of two girls on their World Tour from Riccione to the upper reaches of the World Rankings. I could arrange moving your rest luggage from Berlin to Cologne but that may not help?

Protein Powder

Watching the Pesaro girls warmup and their streaching routine I shoud think they need a lot of powder to repair their muscle damage. Is it not possible to compensate the normal wear and tear from training and compertition by a protien rich diet leaving protein suppliments in cases of injury instead of enjoying it in your milk at bedtime? Good luck tomorrow, Andrew Adams

Hi Andrew, The protein powder

Hi Andrew,

The protein powder is not simply milk powder. As you pointed out and as we are well aware, more than calcium is needed in an athletes diet, hence the protein powder, its additional contents and suppliments.

Thanks for the well wishes for tomorrow.

Well done!!!

Started well, pity then you got Katrin and Ilka, they must know your game inside out, Then the Aussies, if only the first set had gone the other way. Are the match stats anywhere to be seen on internet. Definitly a step in the right direction You are up there with the best. Looking forward to Japan or do you have some match practice in between. Andrew. PS a 90kg athlete needs protein the equivalent of 3 medium chicken breasts per day!!

By the sounds of it you and

By the sounds of it you and Scarlett so need to get an endorsement deal from who ever makes the protein powder . :) I to want to wish you both well for tomorrow. Team LG Number One Fan .

If China is one of your least

If China is one of your least favorite stops on the World Tour which would be your favorite ? What do you use the protein powder for ? I look forward to seeing your results . Team LG Number One Fan .

My favourite events last year

My favourite events last year would have been Barcelona, Spain because of all the culture and also Kristiansand, Norway because it was the first event where we qualified into a main draw. But if we are talking about favourite countries and not World Tour events, then it would be Switzerland. Its a very lush country and I find the people very nice and inviting so Im really looking forward to Gstaad later in the year.

The protein powder is to repair the damage that the training and competing does to our muscles. Your muscles need protein to repair and grow. So we take powder with us so we know whats in it and that we like it.
